The problem stems from a fragmented pipeline that fails long before students reach the job market. Many entrants to higher education lack basic digital literacy, a deficit rooted in unequal access to foundational science and mathematics at the school level. When these students eventually graduate, they often hold qualifications in saturated IT management roles rather than high-demand sectors like cloud computing or data analytics.
Employers report that technical proficiency is only half the battle. Roughly half of all current job postings demand transferable soft skills—such as communication and collaborative problem-solving—that traditional degree programs rarely cultivate. This gap makes the transition from classroom to office difficult for new graduates who lack practical workplace experience. While work-integrated learning programs are proven to boost employability, they remain limited in scale and often hindered by administrative failures, such as unreliable stipend payments that disproportionately affect financially vulnerable students.
To bridge this divide, the country requires more than just increased enrollment numbers. Success depends on moving toward a coordinated national strategy that uses real-time labor market data to influence training decisions. Without a shift that links foundational education, targeted technical training, and employer-backed internships, the nation risks leaving its workforce underutilized while critical sectors continue to stagnate for want of talent.
