Wall Street Hits Record Highs as Labor Market Cools

A surprise contraction in U.S. nonfarm payrolls sent equity markets to record territory on Friday, as investors recalibrated their expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate policy. The S&P 500 led the charge, closing at an all-time high following a week of robust corporate earnings and shifting economic data.

Wall Street Hits Record Highs as Labor Market Cools

The Labor Department’s latest report revealed a decline of 23,000 jobs last month, a sharp pivot from analyst projections that had anticipated an 80,000-job gain. While the headline figures signaled a cooling labor market, the unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1% as participation rates contracted, suggesting a complex underlying dynamic for policymakers.

Optimism on the trading floor was further bolstered by a strong earnings season. Data indicates that 85.1% of S&P 500 firms have outperformed analyst forecasts, providing a fundamental cushion for the rally. Gains across the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq were particularly buoyed by significant momentum in high-growth names including SpaceX and Atlassian, helping the major indexes close the week with substantial gains.
