Taiwanese Air Force tests rapid rearmament drills amid China tensions

The demonstration, part of the ten-day Han Kuang war games, focused on the mechanical precision required to sustain combat operations. Crew members attached Magic II and MICA air-to-air missiles to Mirage airframes, simulating an emergency rearmament process. Air force officer Yang Shang-ru explained that the goal is to relay fuel and ammunition expenditure data from the control tower to ground teams instantly, allowing for a near-seamless transition from landing to takeoff.

Beyond air superiority, the military tested its capacity to maintain infrastructure under fire. Air force personnel demonstrated a rapid runway repair technique, using sand, stone, and fiberglass mats to patch bomb craters—a process intended to restore operational capability within four hours. These efforts extend to critical infrastructure protection, with troops recently fortifying the Danjiang Bridge, a strategic chokepoint providing a potential path toward Taipei. As Beijing continues its pressure campaign, the exercises underscore Taiwan’s reliance on a mix of domestic, American, and French-supplied hardware to defend its sovereignty.
