Fourteen-Year-Old Gunman Kills Eight in Thai School Rampage

A fourteen-year-old student turned a grandfather’s firearm on his own family and classmates Friday, killing at least eight people in a shooting rampage at Debsirin Nonthaburi School. The violence, which left another fifteen injured, marks the deadliest mass killing in Thailand since the 2022 daycare massacre in the nation's northeast.

Students fled the campus on the outskirts of Bangkok as gunfire echoed through the halls. Witnesses initially mistook the sound for firecrackers before the reality of the assault set in. Police reports indicate the teenager fired at least 26 rounds during the attack, having arrived at the school after fatally shooting his grandparents at home. Emergency responders discovered a male teacher dead on an upper floor and a female teacher suffering from severe chest and arm wounds in another classroom.

Lieutenant General Trairong Phophan confirmed the shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head after emergency teams attempted to revive him on-site. The tragedy is the second school shooting in Thailand this year, reigniting urgent debate over the country’s high rate of civilian firearm possession. With approximately 10.3 million guns in circulation, Thailand maintains the highest rate of private gun ownership in Southeast Asia, despite previous government efforts to tighten licensing and import regulations.
