Mubayi, a researcher in the Department of Chemical Engineering, had embarked on a solo trek through the Big Pine Lakes area. When he failed to return to his base as planned, his family alerted authorities, prompting a coordinated search by the Inyo County Search and Rescue team and the California Highway Patrol. Rescuers located his remains on the evening of August 3.
While investigators have not disclosed the specific cause of his death, they noted no immediate signs of foul play. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under review. Mubayi was a Hong Kong-raised outdoor enthusiast who had been an avid hiker since childhood. Before moving to Santa Barbara, he earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he focused on chemical engineering. At the time of his death, his academic work centered on sustainable biological alternatives to petroleum, specifically targeting the breakdown of plastics and plant waste.
