Majithia files privilege motion against Finance Minister over Akal Takht row

Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Ganieve Kaur Majithia has moved a privilege motion against Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, accusing him of deliberately misrepresenting directives from the Sri Akal Takht Sahib during legislative proceedings. The motion alleges the Minister misled the House regarding the status of the Jagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Bill.

Majithia contends that Cheema falsely claimed the Akal Takht had prohibited discussion of the amendment bill in the Assembly. According to the MLA, this narrative contradicts the written communication issued by the Akal Takht Secretariat on July 31, 2026, which urged legislators to advocate for amendments reflecting Sikh sentiments rather than stifling debate. She argues that the Minister’s misinterpretation constitutes a direct affront to the dignity of the House.

Beyond the legislative dispute, the motion highlights a pattern of behavior within the Assembly. Majithia asserts that ruling party members frequently target her with derogatory remarks when she raises religious or sensitive policy matters. She criticized the Speaker for failing to intervene in these instances, while simultaneously expunging references to the Akal Takht from official records. Majithia is calling for the Privileges Committee to investigate the matter, seeking to address both the alleged misinformation and the broader issue of protecting the rights and decorum of opposition members.
