Ambassador Julio Bitelli will remain in Brasilia indefinitely rather than returning to his post in Buenos Aires. The move formalizes a cooling of relations that has left the two nations without a formal bilateral meeting since Milei assumed office. Tensions reached a breaking point following Milei’s interview with the television channel LN+, where he targeted Lula with personal insults regarding his past criminal convictions.
This development follows an earlier recall of the ambassador last month, triggered when Milei campaigned alongside Flavio Bolsonaro, the opposition candidate challenging the incumbent in Brazil’s upcoming October election. Argentine officials in Brasilia, led by Ambassador Daniel Raimondi, were formally notified of the status change this week. The Argentine foreign ministry has yet to issue a formal response to the downgrade.
