Congressman Max Miller faces ethics probe over domestic abuse claims

U.S. Representative Max Miller triggered an official House ethics investigation Tuesday, seeking to clear his name following explosive allegations of domestic abuse leveled by his ex-wife, Emily Moreno. The inquiry places the Ohio Republican’s reelection bid under a cloud of controversy, threatening to jeopardize his party’s narrow House majority.

The bipartisan House Ethics Committee confirmed it is reviewing claims that Miller engaged in domestic violence, physical abuse, and illegal drug use. These allegations, which include accusations that Miller burned his ex-wife with boiling water, have drawn sharp condemnation from within his own party. Senator Bernie Moreno, Emily Moreno’s father, recently labeled the congressman a danger to his family and declared he is unfit for public office.

Miller, a former senior White House aide under Donald Trump, maintains his innocence and has pledged full cooperation with investigators. Trump, meanwhile, has distanced himself from the specifics of the case, describing the situation as a private family matter while expressing personal support for his former staffer. With Republicans holding a razor-thin 218-214 advantage in the House, the scandal has turned what was considered a safe seat into a potential liability for the GOP ahead of November’s elections. Should Miller withdraw from the race, party officials face an August 10 deadline to name a replacement candidate.
