Washington State Faces Statewide Emergency as Wildfires Ravage Thousands

The situation in Spokane remains particularly volatile. The Old Trails Fire has consumed 3,000 acres and now threatens 4,000 structures, forcing Mayor Lisa Brown to evacuate essential facilities, including a waste-energy plant and the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital. While approximately 200 homes were evacuated by mid-afternoon, officials warn that number will rise as the blaze expands. Beyond the immediate fire damage, utility provider Avista reported that 60,000 residents are currently without power.

State Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove confirmed that 450,000 acres have burned throughout the summer, describing the current surge as anomalous. The state's resources are stretched thin, with the massive 134,000-acre Kaiser Canyon Fire further complicating containment efforts. Support has arrived from a dozen states and the National Guard, but Major General Gent Welsh warned that the full extent of the destruction may only become clear once the smoke clears and the sun rises over the affected regions.
