Trump rejects DOJ findings on Lincoln Memorial pool damage

Donald Trump publicly challenged his own Justice Department on Saturday, dismissing federal findings that a botched installation process—rather than criminal activity—caused the lining of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to peel. The president insisted the damage was a deliberate act of vandalism, despite official legal filings to the contrary.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump explicitly broke with U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro, questioning her assessment of the $14.7 million renovation project. The dispute follows a motion filed Friday by Pirro and Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Spence, who requested that a judge drop the government's vandalism case against 67-year-old former Olympian David Hearn.

Prosecutors cited internal Department of the Interior documents detailing a rushed installation and repeated lining failures. While Trump acknowledged potential contractor errors, he maintained that the primary damage resulted from sabotage. To support his claim, he circulated a U.S. Park Police video showing individuals in the water, though the footage remains inconclusive regarding whether the people were causing damage or merely clearing away pre-existing debris. The U.S. Attorney's office has not yet provided further comment on the president's remarks.
