Infantino’s World Cup Sell-Off Plan Faces Global Revolt

FIFA President Gianni Infantino is facing an internal insurrection after his senior adviser, Carlos Cordeiro, resigned in protest of a controversial proposal to sell a 20% stake in the World Cup to private investors. The plan, which aimed to raise $4.2 billion, has triggered a wave of condemnation from major football federations.

Infantino’s World Cup Sell-Off Plan Faces Global Revolt

The proposal to create a $20-billion subsidiary, dubbed FIFA Forward Enterprise, has met with fierce resistance across the footballing world. Critics, including UEFA, have accused the governing body of attempting to commodify the sport’s soul to satisfy private interests. Cordeiro, a former U.S. Soccer Federation vice president appointed by Infantino in 2021, slammed the initiative as a bad deal that mortgages the game’s future without justification. Internal dissent has reached the highest levels of FIFA, with Chief Operating Officer Kevin Lamour publicly describing the project as the work of a single person rather than an organizational priority.

Despite reports suggesting the plan has collapsed, FIFA maintains it will continue to present the proposal to its 211 national member associations. The governing body insists that media reports have been inaccurate and that it remains committed to a democratic consultation process. However, the opposition is significant. UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation collectively represent 143 associations, creating a formidable bloc against the leadership. While UEFA has gone as far as threatening a boycott of FIFA tournaments, others are demanding greater transparency regarding the involvement of private capital, specifically the fund led by Joshua Kushner. As Infantino approaches his re-election campaign, the internal friction over this financial maneuver threatens to define the remainder of his tenure.
