Parliament Adjourned Amid Cabinet Meeting and Opposition Protests

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gathered his Union Cabinet at Parliament on Friday as a volatile session in the Lok Sabha saw the opposition demand the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah. The legislative agenda pressed forward despite the chaos, resulting in the abrupt adjournment of both Houses of Parliament.

The Lok Sabha managed to pass the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Bill during the uproar. The legislation, which amends the 1969 Act, moved through the chamber while opposition members voiced intense dissent. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticized the boycotting members, noting that the schedule for the bill had been established by the Business Advisory Committee. He argued that the government sought full participation and cautioned members against claiming they were denied a chance to debate the measure.

Following the passage of the bill, the Lower House adjourned until August 3. The Rajya Sabha faced a similar fate, shuttering its doors for the day as members protested various grievances, including police conduct during recent student demonstrations regarding the NEET examination. The Upper House is scheduled to reconvene on Monday at 11 am.
