Mexico Records Strongest Economic Rebound Since 2020

Mexico’s economy surged by 1.5% in the second quarter, marking its most robust expansion since late 2020. This performance, confirmed by the national statistics agency INEGI, decisively outpaced the 1.3% growth anticipated by analysts and effectively reversed the 0.6% contraction recorded during the opening months of the year.

The recovery was broad-based, fueled by a strong showing in primary industries such as agriculture, fishing, and mining. Manufacturing and construction sectors climbed 1.6%, while service-oriented businesses posted a 1.5% gain. These figures pushed the year-on-year growth rate to 2.2%, a result that surpassed broader market expectations.

Despite these gains, the long-term outlook remains tempered by structural concerns. Gabriella Siller of Banco Base pointed to risks facing the retail, construction, and tourism-related service sectors, particularly as the economic boost from co-hosting the World Cup begins to fade. While private analysts remain cautious, the Ministry of Finance maintains an optimistic stance, forecasting annual GDP growth between 1.8% and 2.8%.
