Malaysia Moves to Repatriate 5,000 Rohingya Refugees to Myanmar

Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail is overseeing the identification and screening process for those slated for repatriation, while the foreign ministry manages ongoing negotiations with Naypyidaw. Malaysia currently hosts approximately 126,000 registered Rohingya refugees, despite remaining a non-signatory to the UN refugee convention. The logistics of this transfer remain complex, particularly given the historical persecution that forced these individuals to flee their homeland.

Domestic pressure remains high as the government attempts to overhaul its local asylum framework. Authorities recently detained over 100 refugees who had sought assistance from the UNHCR, signaling a shift toward stricter domestic oversight. Officials have requested that the UN agency pause new registrations while the government works to implement a localized system for managing asylum seekers.
