Enexis Secures €500 Million EIB Loan to Modernize Dutch Power Grid

The capital injection will facilitate the installation of 2,800 kilometres of medium-voltage cables and 1,800 kilometres of low-voltage lines. These upgrades span Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, North Brabant, and Limburg, where the utility plans to reinforce transformer stations and integrate smart digital management tools. The project addresses acute capacity bottlenecks caused by the rapid shift toward electric vehicles, heat pumps, and localized wind and solar generation.

EIB Vice-President Robert de Groot emphasized that stabilizing these regional networks is vital for both economic activity and energy security. For Enexis, the funding provides necessary financial flexibility to execute an unprecedented investment scale. CFO Marjanne van Ittersum noted that the backing ensures the utility can meet rising customer demand while building a grid capable of supporting long-term national climate targets. This agreement reinforces the EIB’s mandate as the European Union’s climate bank, prioritizing infrastructure that accelerates the transition to a low-carbon economy.
