VanEck Debuts China-Focused Semiconductor ETF Amid Tech Decoupling

Investors now have a direct instrument to bet on China’s push for chip self-sufficiency as VanEck rolls out its latest ETF, SMHC. The fund tracks 25 companies deeply embedded in the domestic semiconductor supply chain, navigating a market landscape defined by heavy state backing and intensifying global trade friction.

The fund physically replicates the MarketVector China Semiconductor 10 Percent Capped Screened Index, requiring constituents to derive at least half their revenue from chip production or related equipment. With an annual expense ratio of 0.65 percent, the dollar-denominated ETF reinvests all income, offering a targeted play on firms like Cambricon and NAURA. These entities are currently positioned as primary beneficiaries of Beijing's drive to bypass tightening U.S. export restrictions that limit access to advanced foreign hardware.

This aggressive expansion into the Chinese tech sector carries substantial volatility. Potential investors face risks tied to shifting regulatory frameworks, state-led industrial interventions, and the inherent fragility of a single-sector focus. While VanEck manages a global asset portfolio of approximately $244 billion, including a successful international semiconductor fund holding over $8 billion, this new vehicle underscores the high-stakes gamble on China’s ability to build an independent technological ecosystem.
