New Support Hub Launches for Malaysia’s Migrant Seafood Workers

Operated by the National Union of Seafarers Peninsular Malaysia (NUSPM) alongside the International Labour Organization’s Ship to Shore Rights South-East Asia programme, the centre tackles systemic barriers to information. Funded by the European Union, the project provides direct legal assistance, safety guidance, and leadership training for those navigating the complexities of the nation's blue economy.

Beyond the Port Klang office, mobile teams will deploy across Selangor and Perak to reach workers directly at processing plants, aquaculture farms, and on board fishing vessels. Audrey-Anne Rochelemagne, the EU’s Deputy Head of Cooperation for Malaysia and Thailand, noted that the initiative seeks to foster sustainable, responsible supply chains while curbing risks of exploitation. NUSPM Executive Secretary Ikmal Azam Thanaraj Abdullah emphasized that the union’s maritime expertise allows them to engage directly with fishing communities, ensuring workers can effectively exercise their rights and advocate for fairer employment conditions.
