Pivdennyi Mining Halts Output as Black Sea Shipping Stalls

Russian strikes against civilian vessels in the Black Sea have paralyzed critical supply chains, forcing the Pivdennyi Mining and Processing Plant to suspend iron ore production. With logistics channels effectively blocked, the Odesa-based facility—a key asset for the Metinvest group—now faces a total backlog of unsold inventory.

The suspension reflects a broader crisis gripping Ukraine’s export sector. Last year, the facility processed nearly 11,000 metric tons of iron ore concentrate, but current security risks have made transit through regional ports untenable. Shipowners have largely stopped sending vessels to Odesa, leaving primary exports like grain and ore stranded in warehouses.

Pivdennyi management remains hopeful that operations can resume in August, provided the maritime security environment stabilizes. The disruption is not isolated; companies such as Allseeds and Kernel Holding have also shuttered local operations, signaling a sharp contraction in industrial activity as the conflict directly chokes the nation’s primary source of foreign currency earnings.
