The project began when entrepreneur Sanjana T., a graduate of the National Institute of Design, crossed paths with Skyroot Aerospace co-founder Pawan Chandana. Their conversation, rooted in a shared curiosity about the literal interpretation of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star," evolved into a mission to send a symbol of Indian heritage into space. They chose the lotus for its deep-seated cultural resonance, associating it with wisdom and resilience across various Indian traditions.
Crafted using advanced lab-grown technology in Surat and Bengaluru, the diamond was designed to maintain aesthetic integrity from any angle, ensuring it remained visually striking regardless of the spacecraft's orientation. The payload reached its destination aboard the Vikram 1 mission, where it now orbits 450 kilometers above the planet. As the craft completes 16 sunrises every 24 hours, the diamond frequently catches sunlight, an effect that Sanjana describes as a "blooming" visual spectacle. For the teams involved, the endeavor serves as a bridge between the precision of private aerospace engineering and the creative ambitions of a new generation of Indian entrepreneurs.
