Ukraine Targets 2027 Prototype for Freyja Anti-Ballistic Shield

The Freyja project relies on an open-architecture design, allowing European allies to integrate domestic components like radars and sensors. This modular approach, compared by President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to building with Lego, aims to bypass the lengthy production cycles and political volatility associated with current Patriot supplies. Major industry players including Eurosam, Leonardo, Thales, and Saab have joined the effort, with Ukrainian manufacturer Fire Point serving as the lead industrial partner.

Recent Russian ballistic strikes on Kyiv and Odesa have underscored the urgent need for the system. While existing European interceptors like the SAMP/T and IRIS-T have struggled against high-speed ballistic threats, the Freyja initiative focuses on creating a cost-effective, interchangeable alternative. An international steering committee will soon meet to finalize research and development costs, prioritizing a practical, industry-integrated model over traditional bureaucratic defense procurement.
