A staple of gym bags worldwide, creatine is gaining traction as a potential ally in oncology. New research from UCLA suggests the supplement does more than fuel muscle growth; it effectively energizes dendritic cells, the critical gatekeepers that instruct the immune system to hunt down and destroy cancerous tumors.

While creatine is primarily recognized for its role in boosting adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels to enhance strength, its biological utility appears far broader. Immunologist Lili Yang and her team discovered that the supplement supports not only the killer T cells responsible for attacking malignancies but also the dendritic cells that guide the immune response. By analyzing gene activity in mice and lab-grown cells, the researchers identified that the creatine transporter—the mechanism cells use to absorb the nutrient—becomes hyperactive in tumor-related dendritic cells. When this transporter was disabled in laboratory settings, the immune cells faltered, losing their ability to activate T cells.

Conversely, boosting creatine levels in mice afflicted with melanoma resulted in a measurable slowdown of tumor growth. Despite these promising observations, the scientific community urges caution. These findings remain confined to preclinical models, and clinical trials are essential to determine if human patients might experience similar benefits. Experts emphasize that cancer patients must consult their physicians before incorporating the supplement into their care, as individual health conditions dictate safety. Should upcoming human trials validate these results, creatine could emerge as a highly accessible, low-cost strategy to improve the success rates of current immunotherapy treatments.
