UK Private Sector Rebounds as July PMI Hits Five-Month High

A cooling in global tensions provided a rare window of calm for the British economy in July, pushing the UK Composite Purchasing Managers' Index to 52.1. The figure comfortably outperformed expectations in a Reuters survey, marking the sector's strongest showing since February and snapping a three-month streak of stagnation.

Services activity led the charge, with the S&P services PMI climbing to 51.8—its highest mark since April. Manufacturing also showed resilience, edging up to 52.8 from a previous 52.5. Hospitality operators were among the primary beneficiaries, capitalizing on a combination of domestic tourism and unseasonably warm weather that kept holidaymakers within the UK.

Retailers reported an unexpected uptick in sales, particularly across online platforms and apparel, as summer temperatures spurred consumer demand. While these indicators point to a period of stabilization, analysts remain cautious. The underlying fragility of the recovery persists, with energy price volatility and the potential for renewed geopolitical friction threatening to derail the current momentum.
