Kallas Challenges U.S. Trade Tariffs Over Labor Law Dispute

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has openly challenged the U.S. government’s decision to impose fresh tariffs on European goods, dismissing Washington’s justification that the bloc fails to enforce adequate anti-forced labor controls as entirely meritless.

Speaking to Reuters on the sidelines of ASEAN meetings in Manila, Kallas asserted that European labor standards currently exceed those mandated within the United States. She criticized the move as a direct breach of existing transatlantic trade commitments, which were intended to prevent such protectionist friction.

The unexpected levy has caused significant alarm in Brussels, where officials view the action as a destabilizing departure from previously negotiated terms. By framing the dispute around labor integrity, Kallas signaled that the EU intends to vigorously defend its regulatory framework against what it perceives as an unjustified trade assault.
