A striking radar image captured by the joint NASA-ISRO satellite, NISAR, has revealed a bird-shaped formation etched into the East Antarctic ice sheet. The discovery, produced by scanning deep beneath the surface, offers a glimpse into the mission's ability to map frozen landscapes with unprecedented precision.

The 'hummingbird' image depicts Nunatak Zaterjavshijsja, a mountain peak obscured by the East Antarctic glacier. As the ice flows around the mountain, structural stress creates a network of crevasses that appear as vibrant green lines against a magenta background of smoother ice. The resulting pattern, which resembles a bird with outstretched wings, highlights how radar frequencies can penetrate snow to reveal geological features invisible to optical sensors.

Launched on July 30, 2025, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, the $1.5 billion NISAR mission utilizes dual radar frequencies to observe Earth. While the S-band radar focuses on agricultural and soil moisture monitoring, the L-band radar is specifically tuned to peer through forest canopies and deep into polar ice. Seongsu Jeong, a signal analysis engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, noted that the imagery provides rich detail on glacier movement, allowing researchers to observe properties previously hidden from view.

The mission is designed to detect surface changes down to fractions of an inch, enabling long-term monitoring of land subsidence, coastal shifts, and ecosystem health. Karen St. Germain, director of NASA's Earth Science Division, emphasized that the satellite’s sensitivity will track everything from glacial melting in Greenland to the subtle deformations of the Earth's crust, turning once-invisible processes into high-fidelity data.
