Sweden Pivots to Domestic Mining to Break Dependence on China

The government is currently leveraging the Per Geijer deposit, a massive find located near the existing Kiruna mine. Enterprise Minister Ebba Busch noted that the project represents a critical step for Sweden, the European Union, and NATO to bolster their collective defense capabilities. To accelerate this transition, officials are considering the creation of a state-owned investment vehicle specifically designed to de-risk and fund large-scale mining operations.

This industrial expansion faces significant domestic hurdles, particularly regarding the indigenous Sami population. Leaders of the Sami community have expressed deep concern over the ecological and cultural impact of new mines on their traditional reindeer herding lands. As the government attempts to reconcile its geopolitical ambitions with local land rights, the project remains a flashpoint between national security mandates and the protection of ancestral territories.
