Jogesh and Meenakashi Bhandari, a couple of Indian origin, were convicted in the UK for orchestrating a massive PPE procurement fraud during the COVID-19 pandemic. The duo, alongside associate Craig Morris, siphoned millions of dollars intended for medical supplies to purchase luxury watches, high-end vehicles, and home renovations.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation revealed that the Bhandaris utilized a company established in 2020 to solicit payments for nitrile gloves that were never delivered. To facilitate the scheme, the couple collaborated with Frank Labruzzo, a US Assistant Attorney General, who provided fraudulent escrow services. These accounts were intended to secure funds, but were instead used to immediately divert payments toward personal debts and extravagant purchases.

Bank records confirmed the couple spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on Rolex watches, jewelry, and holiday packages. Among their luxury acquisitions were a Porsche, an Audi A5, a Land Rover Discovery, and a VW Golf. Beyond the vehicle purchases, the illicit funds were directed toward kitchen refurbishments and significant home improvements.

Evidence presented in court showed the couple provided forged bank statements—some claiming balances of up to $125 million—to convince suppliers of their legitimacy. In one instance, a company entered a $1.8 billion deal, paying $1.35 million for shipments that never arrived. Labruzzo has already been convicted in the US for his role in the operation. The Bhandaris and Morris are scheduled for sentencing on August 21.
