Ford Transfers Valencia Plant Space to Geely in Strategic Pivot

A strategic shift is unfolding in Valencia, where Ford Motor is ceding a portion of its massive Almussafes facility to China’s Geely. This partnership grants the Chinese automotive giant a manufacturing foothold inside the European Union, effectively bypassing import tariffs while providing Ford a lifeline to stabilize its struggling Spanish operations.

The deal arrives as a critical intervention for the Almussafes plant, which has faced significant uncertainty following the discontinuation of several legacy models. By sharing infrastructure with the owner of Volvo and Polestar, Ford intends to slash fixed costs and secure the long-term viability of the site. For Geely, the agreement serves as a gateway to the European market, with plans already underway to initiate production of the EX2 electric vehicle directly on-site.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Ford Europe President Jim Baumbick are expected to finalize the terms during an upcoming visit to the facility. This collaboration marks a notable recalibration of the EV landscape, blending American legacy manufacturing with Chinese industrial scale to navigate the tightening regulatory environment in Europe.
