Lawrence Wong reshuffles cabinet to bolster energy and trade strategy

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has initiated a targeted cabinet restructuring, appointing Tan See Leng to co-lead the Ministry of Trade and Industry alongside Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong. The move signals a pivot toward strengthening Singapore’s industrial resilience through a more focused approach to national energy policy.

Tan See Leng moves from his previous post at the Ministry of Manpower to share leadership duties with Gan Kim Yong, who continues to oversee trade operations. Wong framed the dual-leadership appointment as a strategic necessity, emphasizing that energy security now serves as a foundational pillar for the country’s long-term economic evolution and industrial stability.

This adjustment serves as the third cabinet modification since Wong succeeded Lee Hsien Loong as Prime Minister in 2024. Despite the shift, the administration remains largely stable, with nine ministers from the previous government retaining their existing portfolios. Alongside the trade ministry update, Wong promoted two acting ministers to full cabinet rank and appointed Jasmin Lau to step into the role of acting Minister of Manpower.
