Global Hunger Retreats as Climate and Geopolitical Risks Loom

For the third consecutive year, global hunger has declined, with approximately 645 million people—7.8% of the world population—experiencing undernourishment in 2025. While this downward trend marks a departure from post-pandemic instability, United Nations agencies warn that progress remains fragile, threatened by climate volatility and mounting geopolitical tensions.

Every continent recorded improvements in hunger levels last year, a milestone not seen in several years. India served as a primary engine for these gains, as its expanded welfare initiatives and agricultural productivity helped push national hunger levels below 10%. Similar progress appeared across Latin America and parts of Africa, including Ethiopia and Senegal, where targeted interventions have begun to stabilize food access.

Despite these advancements, the global landscape remains precarious. The U.N. report highlights that 2.69 billion people still cannot afford a healthy diet, with the daily cost of nutrition averaging $4.28. This affordability gap is particularly acute in Africa, where more than 66% of the population faces barriers to accessing balanced food. Infrastructure deficits, such as inadequate cold storage and fragmented regional trade, ensure that fresh produce and dairy remain prohibitively expensive for the most vulnerable households.

Looking ahead, the stability of these gains depends on factors far removed from the farm. Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have already inflated the costs of fuel and fertilizers, directly impacting global food prices. Simultaneously, forecasters are monitoring a potential El Niño pattern, which threatens to trigger droughts and floods that could devastate crop yields. While hunger is retreating, the shift toward a more volatile global environment suggests that sustaining this momentum will require more than just increased food production; it demands resilient supply chains and climate-adapted agricultural systems.
