Droupadi Murmu Marks Historic First Visit to Moldova

President Droupadi Murmu has arrived in Chisinau, marking the first time an Indian head of state has visited Moldova since the two nations established diplomatic ties in 1992. The visit signals a pivot toward deeper economic integration, with New Delhi aiming to leverage trade, technology, and talent to reshape its regional influence.

Secretary (West) Sibi George described the trip as a strategic evolution for both countries. Officials are now setting their sights on doubling trade volume, viewing India’s broader economic frameworks with the European Union as a gateway to accelerate growth. Beyond traditional commerce, Indian firms are already deepening their footprint in Moldova’s energy infrastructure, a sector identified as critical for future bilateral stability.

Looking ahead, the partnership is shifting toward high-tech collaboration. Both governments are exploring joint ventures in artificial intelligence and expanding training quotas for Moldovan specialists under the ITEC program. By scaling up these capacity-building initiatives, India aims to cement its role as a primary partner in the professional development of the region's workforce.
