JD and Usha Vance Welcome Son Alec Neel

Vice-President JD Vance and his wife, Usha, welcomed their fourth child, Alec Neel Vance, on Sunday morning at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda. The birth marks a historic milestone, as Vance becomes the first sitting US vice-president to have a child in office since 1870.

The couple confirmed the arrival in a joint statement, noting that both mother and newborn are healthy. Alec joins the family as the third son for the Vances, who are already parents to Ewan, 9, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4. The pair has maintained a policy of keeping their children largely out of the public eye throughout JD Vance’s political career, which includes his time as a Senator from Ohio and his current role in the Trump administration.

Medical staff at the White House Medical Unit and Walter Reed received specific praise from the couple for their care during the delivery. The birth is a rarity in American governance; the last vice-president to welcome a child while serving was Schuyler Colfax in 1870, preceded by John C. Calhoun in 1829. Usha Vance, a Yale Law School graduate and daughter of Indian immigrants, previously hinted at the possibility of growing their family during interviews last year. The couple married in 2014 after meeting as law students.
