Skyroot Aerospace Marks Historic Private Space Milestone

At the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, the atmosphere shifted from professional tension to jubilation as Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched its Vikram-1 rocket. The achievement drew a direct, nine-minute call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who lauded the mission as a defining breakthrough for India’s private space sector and its ambitious young workforce.

Skyroot Aerospace Marks Historic Private Space Milestone

During the conversation with co-founder Pawan Kumar Chandana, it was revealed that the average age of the team behind the launch—dubbed Mission Aagaman—is just 28. Prime Minister Modi framed this youth-led success as a validation of his confidence in India’s next generation, noting that the team had turned skepticism into a tangible national triumph. The mission carried a symbolic payload: a handwritten "Vande Mataram" note from the Prime Minister, commemorating the 150th anniversary of the national song.

Chandana confirmed the note had successfully reached space, physically cementing the connection between the country’s history and its modern aerospace aspirations. The Prime Minister encouraged the team to continue their trajectory, emphasizing that the rise of private enterprises like Skyroot is essential for accelerating innovation. This launch marks a significant shift in the country's space landscape, moving from state-led initiatives to a broader, more competitive ecosystem.
