Delhi Police Detain Hunger-Striking Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk

Under the watchful eyes of Jantar Mantar, Delhi Police forcibly removed climate activist Sonam Wangchuk from his protest site, ending his 20-day hunger strike. The operation, which supporters describe as an aggressive extraction, has triggered a volatile standoff between authorities and environmental advocates concerned for his health.

Abhijeet Dipke of the Cockroach Janata Party characterized the intervention as an act of excessive force. He alleged that officers dragged a frail Wangchuk from his post, reportedly using derogatory language during the struggle. Supporters gathered at the scene immediately condemned the move, viewing the state's intervention as a direct suppression of his environmental advocacy.

In response, the Delhi Police maintain that the removal was a necessary medical precaution rather than a punitive measure. DCP Sachin Sharma asserted that the department acted in strict compliance with a Delhi High Court directive focused on the activist’s physical stability. According to officials, the transfer to a hospital was mandated by medical experts who determined that Wangchuk’s condition had reached a critical threshold requiring immediate professional intervention.
