MDDA Invites Applications for 2026 Community Media Grants

South African community media organizations have until July 31 to secure financial support for the 2026/27 cycle. The Media Development and Diversity Agency is prioritizing outlets that produce content in indigenous languages, aiming to bolster local journalism in historically marginalized and rural areas of the country.

The agency launched the call for funding on July 3, urging applicants to utilize the provided business plan and budget templates to streamline the submission process. To ensure eligibility, organizations must provide a comprehensive suite of documentation, including current tax clearance certificates, audited financial statements, and proof of independence from commercial media, political parties, or government entities.

Applicants are also required to submit three-year financial projections, evidence of operational reach through web analytics, and professional qualifications for key staff members. By mandating a B-BBEE certificate and specific editorial samples, the MDDA aims to maintain a high standard of accountability and representation within the sector. Those encountering technical issues with the online portal should reach out to the agency directly at margaret@mdda.org.za for guidance.
