Punjab Congress Leadership Faces Internal Revolt Before 2027

Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi is mounting an aggressive challenge against Punjab Congress President Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, forcing the party high command to intervene. As the state moves toward the 2027 Assembly elections, this internal factionalism threatens to destabilize the party’s strategy against incumbent rivals.

The push for a leadership overhaul gained momentum following a strategic meeting between Channi and Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa. Their alliance signals a growing friction within the state unit, which has prompted AICC Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel to submit a formal assessment to General Secretary K C Venugopal. Despite the clamor for change, Baghel’s report maintains that retaining Warring remains the most viable path, citing support from a majority of district-level leadership.

Party heavyweights Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have held emergency consultations to neutralize the discord. The stakes are significant, as the Congress must reorganize its ranks while the Aam Aadmi Party prepares to defend its 2022 mandate. With the BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal intensifying their own electoral preparations, the Congress leadership is balancing the risk of further fracturing the party against the necessity of a unified front for the upcoming contest.
