European Prosecutors Scrutinize Subsidies Linked to Andrej Babis

European investigators are now vetting subsidy payments directed toward companies formerly controlled by Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis. The inquiry focuses on his massive Agrofert conglomerate, which received millions in agricultural funding before being shifted into a trust fund as the populist leader returned to his current government post.

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office is collaborating with local police to determine if the financial arrangements behind the Agrofert group align with European Union regulations. While Babis maintains that moving his business empire into a trust fund satisfies all legal requirements regarding conflicts of interest, opposition critics argue the separation remains insufficient.

Finance Minister Alena Schillerova has publicly defended the Prime Minister, asserting that the current structure adheres to all relevant statutes. The investigation currently remains in its preliminary stages, with no formal allegations of wrongdoing or charges filed against the Prime Minister or his former holdings.
