US Veteran Arrested After Months of Unaccounted Travel Across India

Jordan Brown, a 36-year-old American claiming former service in the US Navy, was apprehended by Sashastra Seema Bal personnel while attempting to cross an unauthorized trail into Nepal. The arrest in Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj district marks the end of an eight-month period during which Brown traveled through India without a passport.

Security forces intercepted Brown near border pillar 516 in the Mainihwa area after he ignored orders to halt and attempted to evade patrol officers. A search of his belongings yielded two mobile phones and 31,460 rupees, but no travel documents or identification. Under interrogation, he offered conflicting accounts of his movements, claiming he lost his passport in Thailand before reaching India by sea from Sri Lanka in November 2025. He allegedly spent the intervening months residing in Goa and Bengaluru.

Siddharth, the additional superintendent of police for Maharajganj, confirmed that a case has been registered under the Immigration and Foreigners Act. Authorities are currently verifying his claims regarding his background and motives. The incident has drawn heightened scrutiny from security agencies, occurring in the shadow of recent investigations into foreign nationals allegedly infiltrating India from Myanmar. Notably, the National Investigation Agency recently apprehended American citizen Matthew Aaron Van Dyke and six Ukrainian nationals on charges involving conspiracy and support for insurgent groups, further intensifying concerns over cross-border security and illegal movement.
