Three arrests follow deadly arson attacks on Greek political targets

A 72-year-old woman’s death during a firebombing spree in Thessaloniki has triggered a major counter-terrorism crackdown, resulting in three arrests Friday. Greek authorities linked the suspects to the third in a series of targeted arson attacks against residences associated with the ruling New Democracy party.

The assailants utilized improvised incendiary devices, leaving ignited gas canisters outside three separate properties. While the initial two strikes resulted strictly in property damage, the third attack escalated into tragedy, injuring five residents. The 72-year-old victim, mother to a parliamentary candidate, succumbed to her burn injuries after being hospitalized.

Two of the targeted homes housed figures affiliated with the governing party, while the third residence belonged to a local politician. Greece maintains a long-standing history of politically motivated arson and explosive attacks, though recent years have seen a shift toward incidents that primarily destroyed property rather than claiming lives. Police officials have not released further specifics regarding the suspects or their potential motives behind the escalation.
