Jailed American Robert Gilman hospitalized in Russia

Robert Gilman, a former U.S. Marine currently serving a decade-long prison sentence in Russia, has been admitted to a hospital for an undisclosed illness. The transfer prompted a Voronezh court to postpone a hearing regarding a prosecutor's appeal, casting fresh uncertainty on the status of a detainee identified as a key figure in potential prisoner exchange negotiations.

Gilman’s legal counsel confirmed the hospitalization but declined to provide a specific diagnosis. The U.S. State Department acknowledged the situation, stating that consular assistance is being provided to the detainee in Voronezh. This development follows a series of legal escalations for Gilman, who was initially imprisoned in 2022 for assaulting a police officer while intoxicated. His sentence was subsequently extended following convictions for assaulting prison staff and a state investigator.

While Russian authorities maintain the legitimacy of these charges, Gilman’s supporters in the United States allege he was ill at the time of his initial arrest and was intentionally provoked by prison officials to secure further convictions. The case remains politically sensitive, as Gilman has been identified by sources close to the Kremlin as one of nine Americans Washington has sought to repatriate. The State Department reiterated that securing the safety of Americans abroad remains a top priority, though the immediate health status of the former Marine stays obscured by the secrecy of the Russian penal system.
