Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a two-year national tribute marking the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee. Through a video address, Modi underscored the historical figure’s foundational role in advocating for national unity and the vision of 'Ek Bharat' that continues to shape current political discourse.

Born in Calcutta in July 1901, Mookerjee established himself as a distinguished educationist and parliamentarian before founding the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the ideological precursor to the modern Bharatiya Janata Party. His career was defined by a rigorous commitment to nationalism, a path influenced by his father, Sir Ashutosh Mookerjee.

The BJP has structured the commemoration to run from July 6, 2022, through July 6, 2024. This extended celebration serves to reinforce the party’s 'Nation First' platform while solidifying the historical narrative surrounding its origins. The initiative has garnered significant attention in West Bengal, where the party seeks to expand its political footprint by anchoring its modern platform in Mookerjee’s legacy.
