Russian Patrol Aircraft Harasses HMS Prince of Wales in Norwegian Sea

A Russian Bear-F maritime patrol aircraft repeatedly buzzed the HMS Prince of Wales in the Norwegian Sea, forcing the Royal Navy to scramble two F-35 fighter jets for an urgent intercept. The provocative low-altitude maneuver, which included dropping sonobuoys near the carrier, occurred just days before a critical NATO summit in Ankara.

The UK Ministry of Defence characterized the encounter as unsafe and unprofessional, marking a sharp escalation in regional friction. The incident coincides with a broader British effort to reinforce its High North security posture, specifically focusing on the protection of subsea infrastructure, including critical marine cables and pipelines.

Defence Minister Dan Jarvis recently toured British naval assets in these strategic northern waters to underscore London's commitment to NATO command operations. As Moscow intensifies its military surveillance across the North Atlantic, the British deployment serves as a direct response to perceived threats, aiming to deter further incursions into areas vital to alliance security and maritime stability.
