Tuvalu Secures $10 Million Grant to Secure Maritime Lifelines

The capital, Funafuti, relies on the passenger and cargo vessel Manu Sina to reach outer islands located up to 457 kilometers away. A significant portion of the grant will finance preventive maintenance and class certification renewals for this ship, effectively extending its service life and ensuring safe transit for residents. Beyond immediate repairs, the initiative aims to refine asset management systems to improve the long-term efficiency of the country's transport infrastructure.

For Tuvalu, consistent shipping is the primary driver of economic and social stability. Reliable maritime routes enable access to healthcare, education, and essential markets, while simultaneously strengthening supply chains for local businesses. Azusa Sato, Regional Director of the ADB's Pacific Subregional Office, noted that the grant represents a shift toward sustainable development by prioritizing the maintenance of existing critical services over the construction of new projects. This support, channeled through the Asian Development Fund, addresses the unique geographic vulnerabilities of Pacific island nations by ensuring their most vital connections remain operational.
