Uber Halts European Delivery Expansion to Focus on Delivery Hero Buyout

Months after unveiling an ambitious roadmap to enter seven new European markets, Uber has abruptly pulled the plug on its expansion plans. The ride-sharing giant is shifting its strategy to prioritize the potential acquisition of German delivery firm Delivery Hero, signaling a pivot from organic growth to consolidation.

The company had initially targeted Austria, Norway, and Greece as key pillars for its regional growth. Instead, leadership is now concentrating resources on Finland and Denmark, where early performance metrics have met internal expectations. This retreat suggests a tactical realignment aimed at stabilizing existing operations rather than spreading capital across untested territories.

Central to this decision is the ongoing pursuit of Delivery Hero. Uber has aggressively increased its stake in the German company to nearly 37%, keeping takeover discussions active following an initial offer made in May. By throttling its own expansion, Uber is clearing the path to potentially absorb a major competitor, choosing to buy market share rather than build it from the ground up.
