Eight Injured, Including Four Children, in Coney Island Shooting

A festive Independence Day gathering turned into a crime scene Saturday night when a masked gunman opened fire on a family cookout near the Coney Island boardwalk. The attack left eight people wounded, including children as young as six, shattering the calm of a holiday weekend just blocks from the beach.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that the victims include four children aged 6, 7, 12, and 14. While seven of the injured are reported to be in stable condition, a 21-year-old woman remains hospitalized in critical condition. The shooting occurred in the courtyard of an apartment building, a site located only a short distance from the area where the Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest took place earlier that day.

The assailant, described as wearing a black mask, fired directly into the crowd before fleeing the scene. Authorities have since recovered a firearm, though the perpetrator remains at large. Investigators noted that there were no reported disturbances or conflicts at the cookout prior to the sudden burst of gunfire, leaving the motive for the attack currently unclear.
