Trump and Putin Discuss Ukraine in 90-Minute Call

A 90-minute telephone conversation between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin on Saturday has signaled a fresh push for diplomatic engagement regarding the war in Ukraine. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov described the exchange as business-like and constructive, occurring just ahead of the U.S. President’s arrival at the NATO summit in Turkey.

Trump reiterated his desire for a swift resolution to the crisis, placing the onus on Kyiv for what he described as the unnecessary prolongation of hostilities. The conversation unfolded against a backdrop of ongoing Russian military gains, including contested control over the strategic city of Kostiantynivka. While Moscow maintains that any viable settlement must grant them full authority over the Donbas, Ukrainian officials continue to reject these territorial demands.

This dialogue arrives as previous U.S. diplomatic efforts regarding the region have largely stalled, hampered by Washington’s preoccupation with escalating tensions in Iran. With the NATO summit acting as the next major stage for international posturing, both Trump and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy are expected to address the implications of these talks during the upcoming meetings.
