Trump Proposes Mediation in Ukraine Conflict During Putin Call

A 90-minute phone conversation between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin has opened a new diplomatic channel, with the U.S. president offering to mediate an end to the hostilities in Ukraine. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed the discussion, noting that Trump aims to address the crisis during the upcoming NATO summit.

Trump signaled that U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will spearhead settlement efforts, including a planned return visit to Moscow. While the American side emphasizes a swift resolution, the Kremlin continues to frame the conflict through a lens of military momentum, specifically claiming the capture of Kostiantynivka in eastern Ukraine.

Kyiv has flatly rejected these territorial claims. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and the Ukrainian General Staff maintain that the city remains under their control, highlighting the deep discrepancies in reporting between the two sides. Ushakov used the call to criticize Ukraine's recent long-range strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, labeling the actions as escalatory, while reaffirming Russia’s stated preference for a diplomatic path.
