Brij Lal Defects to Congress in Himachal Pradesh

The political calculus in Himachal Pradesh shifted this week as former BJP stalwart Brij Lal abandoned his party to join the Congress. Accompanied by 300 loyalists, the two-time Rampur assembly candidate signaled a strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 state elections, challenging the BJP’s grip on local strongholds.

Public Works Department Minister Vikramaditya Singh oversaw the induction, framing the move as a vital expansion of the party’s organizational depth. By absorbing a figure with deep roots in the Rampur constituency, the Congress aims to disrupt the status quo in upcoming municipal and local body contests, particularly in Nankhari.

Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee President Vinay Kumar described the defection as the opening salvo of a broader statewide recruitment drive. Kumar pointed to internal fractures within the BJP as the primary driver for the exodus, noting that the party is now moving to consolidate these gains. As the Congress works to translate these high-profile arrivals into grassroots momentum, the shift underscores an increasingly volatile electoral environment in the state.
