India Dispatches Delegation to Iran for Khamenei Funeral

India is sending a high-level diplomatic delegation to Tehran to attend the state funeral of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The presence of senior officials at the multi-day ceremony signals a commitment to maintaining long-standing civilizational ties despite the volatile geopolitical climate currently gripping the Gulf region.

Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain and Deputy Foreign Minister Pabitra Margherita will lead the Indian representation at the services. The funeral proceedings are scheduled to commence in Tehran on July 4, concluding with the interment of the late leader in Mashhad on July 9.

Khamenei, who held power for 36 years and maintained a staunchly anti-Washington policy, was killed on February 28 during an escalation of regional hostilities. By participating in these state rites, New Delhi aims to underscore the depth of its people-to-people connections with Iran, even as the international community navigates the aftermath of the leader's sudden death.
