Ritabrata Banerjee Challenges Trinamool Leadership at Election Commission

Fifty-eight MLAs have abandoned Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, signaling a fractured Trinamool Congress as opposition leader Ritabrata Banerjee formally petitions the Election Commission of India to recognize his breakaway faction. The move follows a June 22 delegate session where the group unilaterally elected its own chairperson and National Working Committee.

Banerjee claims he holds a two-thirds majority within the party ranks, a threshold he believes necessitates official recognition from the ECI. By filing these organisational changes in both Kolkata and New Delhi, his faction seeks to solidify its legitimacy in the wake of significant assembly election setbacks that triggered the current internal upheaval. This aggressive strategy aims to reconfigure the party’s hierarchy and formally displace the established leadership under the current administration.
