AIADMK Defectors Reshape Tamil Nadu Political Landscape

A wave of high-profile departures from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam hit the party on Thursday as a cohort of former ministers and MLAs officially joined the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam at a gathering in Mahabalipuram, signaling a volatile realignment ahead of the 2026 assembly elections.

The defectors include former ministers C Vijayabaskar, M R Vijayabaskar, MSM Anandan, and Valarmathi, joined by a slate of district secretaries and ex-legislators like Manraj and Ramkumar. During the ceremony, veteran leader Sengottiyan praised the emerging platform’s vision, framing the mass exit as a necessary evolution for the state's political direction.

DMK MP Kanimozhi dismissed the maneuver, comparing the rapid absorption of rival cadres to the "washing machine" political tactics often observed in northern states. Despite the criticism, the TVK is positioning itself for a major challenge in 2026, building on the momentum of its inaugural electoral performance where the party secured 108 seats.
